RollerTrol Review: a Good Indicator of Company Performance

Our main DIY parent division ( has enjoyed many client praises since we started our business in 2010. We always try to give our customers the benefit of the doubt when a return is requested, and we often stretch the return policy to accommodate any reasonable request.

However, there are a few exceptions that we would like to define as examples of where we draw the line ...

Example: We sold some smart film that instantly changes from transparent to opaque with a wireless remote control. What follows is a detailed explanation of what happened.

In his attempt to discredit and smear us, this client neglected to include a few details. There were some unfortunate problems with this order, but we did our very best to correct them. Please see the following points.

1. Production Time Complaints:

After the order was placed, we very quickly started getting complaints from this client about the production time and delivery period. This was very odd, since we had been very clear about our production time, as if this client had not read the formal quotation.

It typically takes 10 to 14 days to produce the film, cut to size with electrodes installed, and the shipping by air freight from our Shenzhen warehouse is often 5 days or less. Nevertheless, we put a 'rush' designation on it and the shipment arrived in New York well within the specified time.

2. Shipment Tampering:

We were notified by the client that the power supply transformer for the smart film was missing, so we asked them to double-check the wrapping inside the tube because sometimes items get missed, lost in the extensive wrapping we use.

This client seemed to think we were implying that they were lying about the missing transformer, but we made it clear that was not the case. We were just scratching our heads trying to figure out what might have happened as we had never seen this situation arise before, in the many thousands of shipments we have sent.

We confirmed with our staff that the transformer had been packed, and we concluded that it was likely the customs department that removed it for some reason. We immediately shipped a replacement transformer by air express, which cost a considerable sum of money.

3. Size Issue:

There was a small mistake made in the imperial/metric conversion on one of the sizes. This was easily corrected by trimming a few millimeters from one edge of the smart film, and we sent specific instructions on how to do this (sharp pair of scissors).

This problem will not occur again as we had our programming department write some code that calculates all the dimension adjustments automatically.

4. Damaged Film:

We are very careful with regards to shipping damage as we know from experience that shipments often receive rough handling while passing through the transport system. We use an air-gapped tube-within-a-tube system, with thick layers of foam wrapped around the film itself.

This system will withstand all but the most severe handling, but it could still be damaged if someone drove over it with a forklift, or something catastrophic like that.

So we send very specific instructions on how to inspect the shipment for damage when it arrives. We make sure our customer has read and understood those delivery instructions by asking for a confirming email, prior to shipping.

After several repeated attempts we did not receive any confirming replies from this client, so we shipped it anyway, in consideration of his apparent rush, and it arrived in plenty of time, as previously mentioned.

After a week had passed, the client reported that one piece of film had been damaged, so we asked for a picture of the damage. The picture showed an air bubble in the reported area of damage, which we had never seen before.

Our normal procedure would be to have the defective piece returned for inspection, but instead we immediately contacted our production manager and ordered a new piece to be made, which was shipped to the client by air express, which cost a considerable sum of money.

At a later time, we asked that the damaged piece be returned (we paid for the air freight back to our lab, another big expense). When we unpacked the shipment, we discovered that the protective film had been removed, exposing the adhesive, and that the damaged piece had been installed, and that there was no damage in the area shown in the picture.

There was a definite buckle in the material at one edge, and this damage would have been plainly visible if the piece had been properly inspected as instructed, when the shipment arrived. We make it very clear in the instructions that any piece with visible damage should not be installed.

5. Additional Power Supply Transformer:

The original specification called for a transformer with enough output to drive all 4 pieces, but the client insisted that they should have 2 separate transformers due to their wiring constraints. We agreed to send them another courtesy unit which we did, in consideration of the trouble they had.
This was shipped to the client by air express, which cost a considerable sum of money.

This requirement should have been discussed with us at the time of order, but there was no indication they would be needing 2 power supplies.

6. Electrode Placement:

The replacement piece had nevertheless been shipped via air express to the client, but there was still a problem with it because the electrodes were on the long side of the film. The original specification called for the electrodes to be on the long side, but apparently the first shipment had the electrodes on the short side, which we later understood they preferred.

Unfortunately there had been no complaint about this fact and neither were we notified that they preferred this placement. The replacement arrived with the electrodes on the (correct) long side, and we explained that it is a simple matter to run the wiring back to the same corner where the power feed cable would be connected, and that the wiring is usually concealed with moulding.
That piece was also returned to us, but we found that the electrodes had been damaged, so it was unusable.

They insisted that we make a new piece with electrodes on the short side, so we did that, and shipped it to them by air express, which cost another considerable sum of money.

7. Transformer Failure:

About a week later, we were contacted by the client, reporting that one of the transformers was switching off the film after 5 minutes of operation. We sent him a diagnostic procedure, explaining how he could tell if it was the film or the transformer that was at fault.

We subsequently received a very angry reply that now he was facing the prospect of ripping newly installed wires out of walls, but nothing in our diagnostic procedures indicated that he would have to do that.

8. Paypal Credit:

He later reported that it was the transformer that was at fault, demanding an immediate replacement. Because of the damaged film incident, we decided to change our normal replacement procedure. We were preparing to issue an RMA (Return Merchandise Approval) so that we could replace the transformer after it had been inspected.

But the client then immediately launched a Paypal dispute, asking for a credit to the account. When this happens, Paypal immediately removes the entire paid sum from your account, until the dispute is settled. This can cause an immediate chain reaction of events, which it did.

At this point, we finally lost all patience with this client and accepted the credit, and the full loss, which put an end to the relationship. We made an honest effort to satisfy all the complaints, but there is a limit to what we can do in a situation like this, and we are left wondering who ripped off whom ...

Four screws removed and the Velux manual chain drive is out. Four screws in and your motor is mounted. Then, the plastic housing from Velux (previously removed to access the Velux chain mechanism) can be trimmed about one inch in the middle (to extend the length of the slot where Velux has their chain rise up) and the plastic housing fits nicely over your motor. That, combined with the screen, gives a pretty good closing for bugs. A little more creative work is needed between the Velux screen and the housing, but it fits well."

  • "I bought four 74" blackout shades from Home Depot. They were Bali cut to length shades which they trim for you. One end is easily pried off. The end with the spring motor succumbed to being placed in a vice, and a fair bit of wiggling. The cardboard tube is 1" in diameter. However, the wall thickness is 1/4" making it necessary to ream out the wall to 3/4". I did this with a long 3/4" bit that is used for drilling the holes in joists for electrical wire installations and retrofits. I put the bit into the same vice and reamed out the cardboard tube by rotating the tube and shade while pushing it into the drill bit. A little bit of work, but not too hard to do. I have not tried putting the drill bit into a drill yet - but I suspect that will be a lot easier. I just know that the manual method will work. So the next thing is to insert the motors when they arrive, put up the brackets and shades, and wire the whole thing up. The cost for the 4 shades was $211.48 plus tax.
